How do I get a Supervisor?
The process for supervisor allocation is outlined below.
You can download the list of research interests Here.
The form for entry can be downloaded here. The form is in excel format and uses macros. You will need macros enabled under the tools menu. If the you receive a warning on opening the file select the use macros option. If you are completely stuck with excel you can download the Microsoft word file here. Please mail the file to michael.greyling@wits.ac.za by Lunchtime Wednesday the 6th of February.
Supervision Allocation 2008.
Instructions for Students.
The allocation of supervisors to students is centralized in the department and follows the following process. Note that due to changes in the Boards requirements some of you may have been allocated via an Ad Hoc process already.
Step 1
During orientation you will receive a list of all the supervisors and their research interests. You should use this to get a sense of what topics you may be interested in. In addition there are also some more specific projects which a number of lecturers are involved in. Finally be aware that your course may have specific restrictions regarding content and/or supervisors. Your course coordinators will indicate these to you.
Step 2.
During the orientation weeks all lecturers will post times on their door for supervision consultation. You should make use of these opportunities to possible research projects with these lecturers. Note that while you and a lecturer may agree on a topic, ultimately the allocation process will assign supervisors to students and no deals can be cemented during this period.
Step 3.
On the form provided you must list your desired topics in order of preference. You should specify the lecturer/s with whom you discussed this topic and your preferences in that regard. This form must be returned to the box provided in the main office by no later than MIDDAY, FRIDAY 6th of FEBRUARY Late applications will be allocated a supervisor with reference to their choices. In addition I would you must also mail your choices using the entry form to michael.greyling@wits.ac.za as this will save me typing them out.
Note: At the risk of sounding officious it is not my responsibility to ensure the email gets there. Put a read receipt request on your mail to ensure that it arrived and send it early. Digital copies of the form will be available at http://witspsychresearch.blogspot.com/
Step 4.
The list of students and topics (and the staff members they are allocated too) are then compiled and sent to all staff. Staff will then have a week to compile their student choices.
Step 5.
The two lists will then be merged and a provisional allocation will be made. This will be sent to staff for comment and a final list will be issued within 2 or three days after that. You should expect the final list around Wednesday the 15th of February.Ad hoc changes (swaps of students with supervisors) can be made if all parties agree or by direction of the head of discipline. All changes must be noted to Mike G for recording purpose.
FAQ.
Can I do a topic that isn’t on the list?
If you have a discussion with a lecturer during the meeting period and discuss a topic which was not listed in their areas of interest and they agree to supervise that topic, you may add it too your list. Note this does not mean you will be allocated that topic or supervisor.
Why didn’t I get the lecturer/topic I chose?
A process of matching occurs. Each lecturer can only supervise a few students and some are in high demand. To ensure a fair spread students will be allocated to across the lecturers.
Once I have been assigned to a lecturer can we change the assigned topic?
Yes, the process allocates students to supervisors and not topics per se. This should be by mutual agreement. A student cannot simply decide to do another topic outside of the lecturer’s interests and a student cannot be forced to work in a completely different area. Lecturers in general have your interest at heart and may guide you away form your chosen topic if they believe it is not viable or appropriate.
What happens if I want to change?
Changes after the allocation are rare but are possible in exceptional circumstances or in the case of mutual agreement to swap. You will need to inform your course co-ordinator and Mike Greyling of any change. If you are unhappy with the allocation you should follow the typical channels, via your course co-ordinate or Mr Greyling.
